Wordle is the internet’s latest obsession, and you have to start with it

In the past few weeks, you may have seen people share an image on social media like the one above, with the word “Wordle” pinned to it, and were very confused.

Well buddy it’s time to end the confusion because Wordle is a new daily word game that has word geeks all over the world who are obsessed with trying to guess a five letter word.

Wordle’s premise is very simple: you just have to guess the five-letter word of the day. There are no hints or clues to help you guess, but you will get some help along the way.

You get six attempts to guess the word. With each attempt, Wordle will let you know how close you are to finding the clue. Wrong letters will turn grey, correct letters will turn yellow and if the letter is in the right place, it will also turn green.

Through the process of elimination and using your noggin, your goal is to guess the word in as few tries as possible. The game is so simple, but if you’re just throwing out five-letter words and hoping to get a match, it can be extremely difficult to come up with any educated guesses.

The first time I played it, I used all six guesses and didn’t come up with the word of the day, which is “gap”. The second time I played, I got lucky by guessing the letter “u” in the right place, but it still took me five tries to figure out the word.

If you have been a fan of “Wheel of Fortune” all your life or like to play Words With Friends on your phone, Wordle is a game for you.

The only disappointing thing is that you can only play it once a day. Which in hindsight might be a good thing considering the game is so addictive.

Wordle’s genesis even has a charmed story. The New York Times reported that software engineer Josh Wardle (yes, the name of the game is a play on words) and his partner created the game as a fun side project, but finally brought it to the public last October after his family group chat became obsessed with playing it.

The number of people engaging with Wordle has gone from around 90 to 300,000 since Sunday, and more and more people are investing and playing.

All you have to do is go to the Wordle website here and start guessing words. Once you’ve guessed the word (or your six attempts are up), you can easily share your results on Twitter or in a group chat with friends. The results show you guesses with the colors and not the actual letters, so your friends can see how you did without giving away the answer.

It is also a kind of no frills game. You don’t need an app or login to create an account. You can play on your desktop or your phone. Just go to the Wordle website and start guessing.

In times when it might take you 10 minutes to escape the endless headlines of COVID and beloved celebrities dying, Wordle couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.

Have fun guessing!
