Every now and then I see a small dot-shaped light appear at the top of my iPhone screen. Sometimes it’s orange. Sometimes it’s green.
I never really questioned it, until one day I thought to myself, Um, what if it matters? I should probably understand this.
A quick google search later, I was on the Apple support page and had my answer.
Apple Support explanation of iPhone orange and green dots
The orange dot tells you that your iPhone’s microphone is being used by an application. It will appear when you’re using voice memos, perhaps briefly after shutting down your camera, or if you’re using an app that exclusively records your voice.
The green dot tells you that your iPhone’s camera is in use by an application. You’ll see it by opening your camera or taking photos on Instagram, Snapchat, or any other social media app that lets you take photos and post them.
That is just about everything. Neither orange nor green indicates anything of particular concern. You can expire now. See the Apple Support page for more details, if you wish.
