The suspect allegedly stole GPS devices; the police contacted him at the Donner Pass rest area

TRUCKEE, Calif. (KOLO) – The California Highway Patrol arrested a man Thursday at the Donner Pass rest area after GPS devices caught in a burglary tracked him there.

Manuel Salvador Cortes, 42, was taken into police custody, fled CHP agents when they found suspected methamphetamine in his pocket and was arrested again, CHP said.

The Rocklin Police Department informed the CHP at around 7:33 a.m. Thursday that it had located stolen equipment and was pinging the rest area. CHP officers followed the ping to a black Volkswagen Jetta in the parking lot and were able to see a large yellow box like the one containing the stolen GPS devices.

The Volkswagen also had electronics, construction tools and other items.

CHP officers searched the vehicle and found a sawn-off shotgun, iPads and many other items that had been stolen. As Salvador Cortes was taken away to be booked, CHP officers were informed that the Volkswagen had been reported stolen.
