From the green M&M to Minnie Mouse, we’ve seen a few female anthropomorphic characters get controversial makeovers in 2022. The latest addition to the list is everyone’s favorite pizza-shaped yellow ball, Mrs. Pac-Man – which seems to have paced . her bags and disappeared into the sunset.
Yes, Mrs. Pac-Man is no more. As a result of some legal wrangling between publishers, the character has been transformed in the new Nintendo Switch re-release of Pac-Land and renamed. Goodbye, Mrs. Pac-Man. Hello, Pac Mom. (Check out the best Nintendo Switch deals if you want to start gaming now.)
so apparently i found out that the Arcade Archives release of Pac-Land coming out tomorrow has been modified to replace Ms. Pac-Man (as well as Baby Pac) to feature the new Pac-Mom character from Pac-Man Museum +.look have at what you did to us AtGames pic.twitter.com/gEDNpXGMfVApr 6, 2022
Gone are Mrs. Pac-Man’s iconic red bow tie and boots, replaced instead with a pink hat, gloves and shoes. As for the name Pac-Mom, we assume this is a reference to her and Pac-Man’s kid? She hasn’t been promoted to mother to Pac-Man himself, has she? That’s a change that I’m not sure our brains can calculate.
Fans on Twitter noticed the change this week, and it’s fair to say they’re shaking to use internet language. “This franchise isn’t the same without Ms. Pac-Man. I hate you so much on AtGames for killing my favorite childhood franchise,” tweeted one user, while another added, “I’m not here for the Ms. Pac. -Delete Human.”
So why the change? It’s pretty hard to follow, but according to Polygon (opens in new tab)It’s because the rights to Ms. Pac-Man are owned by AtGames, not Pac-Man creator Bandai Namco. After “purchasing the royalty interest” to Ms. Pac-Man, AtGames is now entitled to royalty payments when the character is used.
So there we have it, thanks to some pretty boring behind-the-scenes tech, Pac-Man has been forced to switch females. Changing the bow and boots from red to pink isn’t the most dramatic character design transformation ever — but Pac-Mom and Ms. Pac-Man are completely different Pacs. And I’ve used the word “Pac” so many times now that it’s completely lost its meaning. If it ever had one.
