Tasmania has been hit by a “major statewide outage” which is affecting internet and mobile phone services across the state.
The network fault is affecting Telstra, Optus and Aussie Broadband customers, along with other providers.
“Customers may be experiencing a loss of voice and data services,” Telstra said in a statement.
“We are urgently working to resolve the issue.”
EFTPOS and banking services have also been affected, with some people caught out and unable to pay for goods and services.
Basslink, the Tasmania to Victoria electricity connector, confirmed its telecommunications cable was operating “as per normal”.
TasNetworks, the state’s power utility, said in a social media update that the outage, which began around 1pm, was due to “upstream provider issues”.
“TasNetworks external website has been impacted and is currently unavailable as a result,” the message said.
Optus and NNBNCo have been contacted for comment.
More to come.
