Last weekend, the box office champion from Thursday to Sunday, West Side Story, opened with just over $ 10 million, but now Spider-Man: No Path Home came to save the box office with one of the biggest preview nights on Thursday. No way home grossed $ 50 million on Thursday, according to Deadline.
For context, Thursday’s highest preview of the pandemic era was Black Widowis $ 13 million. No way home not only broke that mark, but it ranks as the third highest preview night of all time. Only Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Endgame had larger previews Thursday at $ 57 million and $ 60 million, respectively. Combined with ticket sales estimated at $ 50 million on Friday, No way home has a real chance of hitting a combined “open day” of $ 100 million.
AMC Theaters also report that No way home set a new mark for the Strongest Thursday in December preview in AMC history. AMC estimates that 1.1 million people have seen No way home in AMC theaters across the United States. This estimate does not include the number of people who saw the movie on other movie channels. End of Game is the only film that surpassed this feat, in April 2019.
How did Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios accomplish this feat? It helps to have one of the most popular superheroes in the world. Since Spider-Man’s debut in 1962, the iconic creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko has been Marvel’s flagship character. The first one Spider Man The film paved the way for modern comic book blockbusters in 2002 with a domestic total of $ 403 million. It remains the most profitable Spider Man film to date, nationally. However, Spider-Man: Far From Home was Spidey’s first film to gross $ 1 billion worldwide.
It’s also no coincidence that all of the Marvel-related 2021 movies are nearing the top of this year’s box office charts. Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, Venom: let there be carnage, and even Eternals display impressive numbers. But none of those characters come close to Spider-Man’s popularity among die-hard fans and the general public. There were also some surprises in No way home which made a lot of noise in the weeks and months leading up to its release.
Another major factor of No way homeThe huge preview night is that it wasn’t really a night at all. A few weeks ago, No way home fans crashed Fandango and other ticket sites ahead of time when tickets went on sale. To meet the demand, AMC and other movie channels began to broadcast No way home in the early afternoon. They’ve also pulled the majority of the other movies out of their theaters overnight, so Spider-Man’s latest adventure can get as many screenings as possible. This is why it became the first film since End of Game to approach these heights.
Now that the public knows what to expect No way home, it will be interesting to see how high the numbers for the weekend get.
