Who will be next to restock the console this March?

(The Independent)

Update: The PS5 has sold out at Hamleys. It could drop at Very, Argos and curries could restock the PS5 soon. Read on for more information.

The release of Gran Turismo 7 is almost upon us, but even though next-gen titles are continuing to drop thick and fast, it’s still unbelievably difficult to get your hands on a PS5. Well over a year since its launch, customers are still struggling due to the ongoing global semiconductor shortage sparked by the coronavirus pandemic. Sony’s Playstation 5 was released in November 2020 and even though we’re now in March 2022, it’s still incredibly difficult to secure a PS5.

While the last couple of weeks of February were both pretty successful ones in terms of stock drops, it still managed to be the worst month for restocks since we started tracking consoles back in May 2021, with only 12 drops taking place throughout the month. Our hope now is that March will be the month we start to see retailers really delivering the goods.

Our liveblog is here to get you one of Sony’s elusive next-gen consoles, as well as provide you with the details on the best games and accessories to grab alongside your new machine. If you want to find out which online retailers will be the first to restock, then keep scrolling to receive updates as they happen.

Where is Tesco’s PS5 stock?

“Where the heck is the Tesco PS5 restock?” we hear you cry. The last time Tesco had an online restock was on 15 March 2021. It’s been so long that we’ve stopped predicting Tesco drops altogether, since they never materialise.

The last rumored date for a Tesco drop was 2 June 2021, with stock trackers claiming that it received a shipment in late May 2021. That never happened. We’ve occasionally seen reports of people managing to buy a PS5 from the shelves of Tesco directly, but these reports crop up maybe once every three or four months.

Could we expect a Currys PS5 restock any time soon?

Currys used to use a horrible VIP pass draw system to dish out consoles to its customers. It sounded great in theory, but not great in practice. Why? Because it was too exclusive for its own good.

Anyone hunting for the console between the months of June and December weren’t able to get a PS5 from the retailer at all. It closed the pass draw to new entrants in late May, but continued to send out invitations to buy the console to anyone who had signed up between February and April all the way up to 2 December.

Thankfully, that system has been done away with now, but it’s still pretty difficult to bag a PS5 from the retailer. We last saw a Currys restock on Friday 18 February and before that on Friday 28 January. It seems to be settling into a Friday restock pattern now, so could we see more consoles drop this Friday? Perhaps.

Currys waited exactly three weeks between restocks, so if it sticks to that pattern, we could see a drop on Friday 10 March, but we’ll still be keeping an eye out tomorrow morning.

Argos PS5 stock set to drop next week

Argos has only just had a restock last week and it’s already set for another one, according to the guys over on the @PS5StockAlertUK Twitter account. Argos is one of the handful of retailers that the PS5 stock checker has insider knowledge on thanks to some crafty moles crawling around in the system.

It is currently predicting a drop between 9-11 March, with both disc and digital edition consoles set to drop. In recent months, we’ve been seeing the retailer set stock live between 3-6am in the morning, which isn’t ideal. We’ll update you all if we hear more.

Very PS5 drop predicted for next week

Very is a pretty reliable retailer when it comes to PS5 restocks – it usually likes to drop stock on a Tuesday, sometime in the first half of the month. The last PS5 restock at the retailer took place on Tuesday 8 February at around 10am.

We’re predicting that another Very drop could take place on 8 March – a month after the previous restock. Consoles usually arrive between 9-10am in the morning. The retailer sells both standalone disc edition consoles and disc bundles, but you won’t be able to browse the list until stock actually goes live.

It takes the page down when all stock is sold out, so any Very links on the liveblog will send you to the homepage rather than the PS5 page.

Why is the digital edition PS5 harder to find?

It’s been this way ever since the console was first released back in November 2020. When Eurogamer spoke to sources at various retailers before the console launched, it was told that retailers had been allocated around 25 per cent digital edition consoles and 75 per cent disc edition consoles.

We don’t know if the situation has changed since then, but we still see fewer digital edition consoles dropping than disc edition consoles, as evidenced by Amazon’s restock drop yesterday and its general digital edition pattern. It’s also a pretty smart business idea from retailers themselves, who might also prefer to order in the disc edition console over the digital – they cost more (£449.99) for one, and they can bundle it with physical games to charge a premium.

Some context on the Amazon PS5 restock yesterday

(The Independent)

Amazon finally restocked the digital edition PS5 console yesterday morning, but it sold out in the blink of an eye. While retailers are still seemingly getting shipments of the digital edition console, the drops seem to be far fewer and far shorter than disc edition restocks.

Before the digital edition restock yesterday, Amazon hadn’t dropped digital edition consoles since 22 December, but had restocked the disc edition twice in the interim. While disc edition drops at Amazon can last half an hour, digital edition drops tend to last five minutes at most.

It’s a trend we’ve seen since the PS5 first went on sale back in 2020, and we don’t expect shipments of the digital edition console to improve until the stock situation with the disc edition console sorts itself out first.

Hamleys PS5 stock sells out in minutes

So it seems like Hamleys had a tiny PS5 restock earlier this morning, with the most ridiculous bundle that couldn’t be more Hamleys if it tried. The retailer was selling a disc edition PS5 bundled with a copy of FIFA 22 and, wait for it, a teddy bear which apparently costs around £100.

Despite the frankly outrageous bundle and £614, it still sold out within a few minutes, so enjoy your bear, teddy hunters.

Morning PS5 hunters and welcome back to The Independent‘s PS5 restock liveblog. Our job, as always, is to secure you all a PS5 and we won’t stop searching for consoles until you’ve all got one safely in your homes.

It’s already been a pretty successful start to the month, with both Amazon and EE restocking the console yesterday morning. Want to find out where you can buy one going forward? Stick around and we’ll reveal all.

Live blog signing off

Today saw a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it restock of the PS5 digital edition from Amazon, plus a new bundle offered to EE customers. We also saw handfuls of consoles offered in-store at some branches of Game.

It’s not the flood of consoles we’ve all been waiting for, and it still feels like Sony and retailers are playing catch-up after Christmas. But hopefully we’ll see more PS5s land before the weekend, and potentially even before Gran Turismo 7 arrive on Friday.

As always, we’ll be back again tomorrow to bring you the latest PS5 restocking news as soon as we have it.
