Internet Supports Student Whose Best Friend ‘Borrowed’ and Lost Her $1,700 Coat in Viral Post

An 18-year-old college student turned to Reddit for advice after her close friend stole and lost her expensive winter coat. The incident threatens their friendship as the Redditor asked her boyfriend to replace the cost of the $1,700 jacket, but the boyfriend claimed she couldn’t afford it.

The post has gone viral since it was shared on Wednesday, with 12,600 upvotes and 1,700 comments.

Moncler jackets are notoriously expensive. For example, at the time of writing, the cheapest item of women’s outerwear on the brand’s website is a $750 quilted cardigan. At the top, however, prices for a long coat can exceed $6,000.

The appeal of these types of jackets for many is that they are a great investment that can be worn for years. The anonymous Redditor, known only as u/abbline, said she only enjoyed her jacket for a few months before it went missing.

She explained that her best friend, another 18-year-old, “in the [her] dorm because [she] was host [their] study group.”

“After that she went to a party and she had a little dress on, so she asked if she could borrow my jacket because it is freezing,” she wrote. “I said sure, she can take the purple one on my bed.” However, her boyfriend did not take the purple jacket.

“She told me the next day that she was sorry and that she had lost my jacket at the party,” explained u/abbline. ‘And she hadn’t taken the purple one. She had taken the black one on my bed because it looked warmer.’

“The jacket she lost was a Moncler, and I would never have let her take it,” she continued. “I told her she could take my purple coat, because that’s the one I take to parties, because I’m not worried about it getting lost or stolen.”

The Redditor added that she was “really upset” by the incident and has asked her boyfriend to refund the cost of the jacket. The friend reportedly agreed until she found out how expensive the jacket really was.

“Then she got mad because she said she could never get the money,” she wrote. “I said it’s not my fault because she shouldn’t have taken it, and she freaked out when I said I wanted all the money back.”

In the comments section, u/abbline added more details, including that the jacket cost $1,700 pre-tax. In addition, the jacket was “basically new”: it was given to her as a birthday present earlier this fall by her parents.

Commentators were quick to rate the saga, with the most support for the Redditor, especially since she explicitly instructed her boyfriend to borrow another jacket. Many more were also stunned by the jacket’s high price.

“She purposely took the wrong jacket and lost it. She is definitely responsible for replacing it,” says u/NUT-me-SHELL.

“NTA, but damn that jacket is expensive. I can understand both why you wouldn’t take it to parties and why it was stolen. /tropical diver. ‘It’s up to you whether you give her a break.’

Others assumed that the friend took Redditor’s Moncler jacket on purpose precisely because of its high price.

“The lack of accountability is mind-boggling. The friend hasn’t offered to rectify this, so it feels very seedy,” u/Electrical-Date-3951 noted. “They [didn’t] have permission to take the coat, so she stole it. And I [wouldn’t] would be surprised if she knew it was a more expensive jacket.”
