Internet melts over 6-year-old reaction to mom doing his makeup in video

A video of a mother applying makeup to her 6-year-old son has taken a toll on the internet, sparking personal stories and conversations about makeup and parenting.

The clip shared by Canadian influencer Caitlin Flagager has gone viral on TikTok with over 480,000 views.

When her son Jack first asked for makeup, Flagager reacted “just like my daughter would” [have] asked,” she said news week† “I told them it’s a nice way to express yourself.”

In her video, Flagager filmed the moment she first did Jack’s makeup.

“The feeling of my stomach,” Jack said as she began to paint his face.

“The feeling of your belly?” repeated Flagager. ‘Nervous? Why?’

“I’m afraid,” her son replied. “No one ever told me that.”

‘What did you say?’ asked Flagager. “That you can wear makeup? Did you want to wear makeup before?”

Jack nodded before selecting the products for his face. “I think I love makeup now,” he muttered softly.

The video ended with Jack’s face close to the camera, glowing with blush and glittering eyeshadow, but most importantly a beaming smile.

That was when he “completely accepted himself,” Flagager said in text overlay.

While many parents are hesitant to let young children wear makeup, especially if the child was born male, according to pediatrician Eva Kubiczek-Love, there is no right or wrong age to start using beauty products.

In an article on Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Kubiczek-Love that parents ask children why they are interested in makeup and encourage them to have fun, like Flagher did. The pediatrician also said it was important to buy safe products, make makeup easier by starting with less, watch out for skin irritation, and maintain a healthy skin regimen.

TikTok viewers fully supported Flagager’s parenting approach.

“He’s seriously the cutest ever,” said the top commentator. “You are such an amazing mom who supports every decision he makes!!”

Another person was touched when Jack said that “no one ever told him” he was allowed to wear makeup. “The thought of waiting for this moment,” said the appreciative user. “You’re so great with him.”

Other commentators brought up their own experiences with makeup and youth, in some cases much more painful ones.

“My dad called my brother the f-blemish when I helped him with his makeup,” wrote one viewer. “My brother likes makeup and that comment made him very insecure about expressing himself.”

Flagager told news week that she didn’t believe in following old rulebooks to be a good parent. “Let your child express themselves” [no] matter [what] society says it’s a good thing,” she said.
