How to Manage Your Amazon Kindle Devices and Content

Whether you’re using an Amazon Kindle or running the Kindle app on a computer or mobile device, it can be difficult to manage all the eBooks you’ve collected and the devices you’ve connected to your account. The good news is that Amazon offers a dedicated webpage where you can view, delete, and manage all of your ebooks and devices. Here’s how.

Managing Kindle Content

Log in to Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices page and click on the Content header at the top. You will see different categories including books, audiobooks, apps, and videos. For ebooks, click the Books icon.

Manage content and devices

You can change the content displayed by clicking on the drop-down arrow on the To see menu and selecting another category. Click on the drop-down menu to All to limit results to purchased books, lent books, borrowed books, etc. Select the sort by to change the sort order to Title, Author, or Date Acquired.

Show Books

To manage the availability of a book on a specific device, click the button Deliver or remove from the device. Select the device for which you want to send or delete the book. Then click the button to Make changes.

Deliver to and from device

After you read a book, Amazon marks it as read, but you can change that status, especially if you want to read it again. Click the button to Mark as unread. On the other hand, you can mark an unread book as read by clicking the button to Mark as read.

Mark as read or unread

If you borrowed a book from a subscription service such as Kindle Unlimited or electronically through your local library, a button to Return this book appears. Click this button. Once returned, the book is removed from your Kindle devices and content page.

To further manage a single title, click the More actions side button. In the context menu, you can execute various commands.

More actions

  • Click on To delete to remove the title from your Kindle account and content page.

  • To select Download and transfer via USB to manually transfer the title to a Kindle device via USB cable. Note that this only works with supported Kindle devices, not third-party devices with the Kindle app.

  • To select Clear most read page if you want to resume reading a book from the beginning.

  • To select Read now to open the book on your computer in the Kindle app.

  • To select Add or remove from collection if you have created or want to create collections to organize your books. For example, you can create a collection for non-fiction and another for fiction. Or you can create a collection for historical non-fiction, another collection for science fiction, and maybe a third for autobiographies. You can then add or remove a book from a specific collection.

  • To select Buy an Audible audiobook to purchase the audio version of the selected ebook.

  • To select details of the order to see the details of a book you have purchased.

  • To select Offer now send the book as a gift to someone. Add an email address and a personalized message and click Place your order to make the purchase and send the gift.

  • To select Lend this title to temporarily share a book with someone outside of the devices associated with your account. Enter the person’s email address and add a message to send. This method works even if the receiving person does not have a Kindle device. The ebook will be shared via email and the recipient will have 14 days to read the title before it is automatically sent back to you. Note, however, that not all books offer the possibility of lending. If you don’t see this option for a specific book, the publisher has likely restricted sharing.

  • To select Manage the family library if you’ve set up a Family Library for your Kindle content and want to share a title with a family member. After selecting this option, you should see a list of family members. Click it Add to Library next to someone to share the title with that person.

Manage multiple books

To manage multiple books at once, check the box in front of each title you want to include. At the top of the screen, you can select all books, deselect all, deliver them to a device, delete them, mark them as read or unread, add them to your library, remove them from your library, or add them to one the collection.

Select all books

Additionally, you can search for specific books. Type a word or phrase in the search box to the right and click To go to see the results.

Manage other types of content

Amazon allows you to manage other types of content. Click it To see menu and select a category such as audiobooks. You’ll find similar options and commands to manage your books, audiobooks, magazines, and more.
