Google Ads Phishing Scam Crypto Wallet Theft: Check Point Research

New Google Ads scam steals crypto wallets, new research from Check Point Research (CPR) warns. The new scam allowed criminals to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency over the weekend. According to the report, crooks are placing ads at the top of Google search that mimic popular wallet brands, such as Phantom and MetaMask, to trick users into giving up their wallet password and private key. Check Point Research estimates that over $ 500,000 (approximately Rs. 3.72 crore) of crypto was stolen within days.

In a new blog post, Check Point Research explains that attackers use Google search as an attack vector to target victims’ crypto wallets. He observed that hundreds of thousands of dollars of crypto were stolen from wallets by crooks. To lure their victims, the crooks put Google Ads at the top of the Google search that mimics popular wallets and platforms, such as Phantom App, MetaMask, and Pancake Swap. Each ad contained a malicious link that, when clicked, directed a victim to a phishing website that copied the brand and email from the original wallet website. From there, the crooks tricked their victims into giving up their wallet passwords, setting the stage for wallet theft.

Check Point Research urges the crypto community to stay alert. The official domain “phantom.app” has several phishing variants like phanton.app or phantonn.app, or even different extensions like “.pw” and more. The report states that 11 compromised wallet accounts were discovered, each of which contained a crypto value of $ 1,000 (around Rs 74,400) to $ 10,000 (around Rs 7,74,000). Check Point Research estimates that over $ 500,000 (around Rs. 372 lakhs) was stolen last weekend.

In order to protect crypto wallets from phishing sites, users should examine the browser URL and look for the extension icon. It is recommended that you never give a password to anyone. Also, it is recommended to ignore ads in Google search and always go for the first websites in the results.
