Cityscape in front of McDonald’s frightens the internet

The parking lot outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Enterprise, Alabama, has attracted viral attention online after a photo of an unusual statue was shared on Reddit.

User lefthanddisc posted the image of the statue on the popular subreddit r/strangely frightening with the caption: “The Ronald McDonald statue in front of the McDonald’s in my town.”

With more than 34,000 votes since it was posted on Friday, the photo of the McDonald’s icon has shocked and amused the internet with a twist.

Redditors expressed their confusion, one user wrote “I don’t love it” while another quipped: “Didn’t the Men In Black kill this thing?”

The unusual statue, “Ronald McWeevil”, is part of Enterprise’s Weevil Way community art project.

The 26th weevil to be unveiled in the city was first spotted on March 31.

A website for the community project explains: “Boll Weevils invade Enterprise again, but this time they won’t destroy our crops or ruin the local community. As a collaborative community art project in Enterprise, Weevil statues of reinforced fiberglass have been decorated in various ways, selected by the sponsors of the statues and placed in various outdoor locations around the city.”

Enterprise has a long history with the weevil, a beetle that feeds on cotton and flowers. The weevil came to the US from Mexico in the late 1800s, destroying large cotton fields and is said to have cost the industry more than $23 billion in losses.

But local Enterprise HM Sessions, a seed merchant in the area, helped diversify the town’s crops by bringing peanut seeds to the area, helping farmers recover quickly from the weevil’s destruction. In 1919, when the boll beetle was destroying crops in the US, Enterprise became the largest producer of peanuts in the country. In addition to peanuts, farmers also added potatoes, sugar cane and tobacco to their crops. Today, local residents still praise the boll beetle for helping them diversify their production and bringing prosperity to the city.

Today, the globe weevil has been eradicated in the US after a massive nationwide effort by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). But the local art project ensures that the legacy of the beetle lives on – with 26 striking weevil art sculptures around Enterprise, including Pillbert Weevil in the Bryan Pharmacy and even Mayor Weevil in Enterprise City Hall.

Despite the story behind the statue, Redditors were still unsure about the new “McWeevil”.

One user commented, “Are you in hell?” while another joked: “This should be outright illegal. Terrifying.”
