Amazon Cloud Partner Boss Yeum Now Helps Tackle Shopify, Chart Shows

Doug Yeum — ex-Amazon cloud partner network chief and former “shadow” of Amazon CEO Andy Jassy — has joined a high-profile team within the company to go after Shopify, according to an internal org chart reviewed by Insider.

Yeum left the cloud unit in December for an undisclosed role within the company’s retail operations. The org chart shows that he now works under Project Santos VP Peter Larsen as director of go-to-market for Project Santos with four direct reports. Yeum previously reported to AWS sales and marketing boss Matt Garman as head of global channels and alliances and had nine reports, according to an earlier chart also reviewed by Insider. Amazon declined to comment.

Project Santos is the internal task force Amazon created in 2020 to go after Shopify’s small retailers. Jassy launched the project as a “defensive” move to respond to Shopify’s growing threat as a competitor.

The team has been working on a new POS system to lure merchants from Shopify, Square and PayPal, Insider reported last year. The system aims to help small business customers complete in-store and online transactions and provide inventory and business analytics, according to an internal document Insider reviewed at the time.

Yeum’s move is part of the latest executive shuffle that Jassy has made since he took over as CEO of Amazon last summer.

The latest org chart also reveals that Yunyan Wang, the former shadow of former Amazon retail CEO Jeff Wilke, is involved in the project as the director of software development. A shadow is a sought after position within the company that follows the CEO to all meetings and often precedes key roles at Amazon.
