When the parents of 9-year-old Jayline Barbosa Brandao were overwhelmed by carbon monoxide from a back-up generator in October, the daughter of Brockton, Massachusetts jumped into action and unlocked the equipped iPhone. of her father’s Face ID to call emergency services.

On October 28, Brandao was in bed when she heard her father screaming, reports CNN. While running to her parents’ room, she found her mother overwhelmed by the odorless gas and her father passed out shortly after.

“I thought it was just a headache, then two to three minutes I didn’t feel anything after that,” the girl’s mother Marcelina Brandao said. CNN affiliate WFXT.

Brandao grabbed his father’s iPhone and unlocked the device by holding it in front of his face. It is not clear if the iPhone’s Attention Awareness feature has been enabled. The security measure requires users to look at their device before allowing entry.

After calling for help, the girl took her 7-year-old sister outside to ask a neighbor for help, CNN reports. Brandao’s family were taken to the hospital for treatment and everything is fine.

“She was so smart,” Brandao’s mother said. “It was very scary. If it weren’t for (for) her to call right now, I don’t know what would have happened.”

Brandao’s family set up a borrowed generator after their home went without power for three days due to the powerful snowstorm that wreaked havoc across large swathes of the east coast. Although the generator only ran outside for a few minutes before it was turned off and brought back inside, carbon dioxide seeped throughout the house at a rate of 1,000 parts per million.

Likely unbeknownst to Brandao, any user can call emergency services on a locked iPhone by following the appropriate on-screen prompts. Apple also offers an Emergency SOS feature that automatically dials the local emergency number by pressing the volume and side buttons on the iPhone at the same time.
